Butch Cassidy was a famous American Outlaw who had Mormon parents. The late Paul Newman played him in the movie "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." Robert Redford played the notorious Sundance Kid in the film. What is not known, and I don't point out in the book South Pass I: Handcart Journey, is that Butch Cassidy's father walked across the plains when he was about 12 years old. Butch's real name was Robert Leroy Parker, named after his grandfather. Butch's dad, Max, and their family converted to Mormonism while they were living in England. They boarded a ship in Liverpool with the rest of the Latter-day Saints who would comprise the first ever handcart company to cross the plains. In Handcart Journey is the story of young Arthur Parker who was lost in a rainstorm, and the handcart company had to continue on without him. his father, Robert (Butch's grandfather) left the company to find his son. This story is true and is related by Butch's sister in her book "Butch Cassidy My Brother." Many of the other stories in the books are true as well. Check back for more updates on these stories.
